Max McMurdo is a designer, author and TV presenter. You may recognise his creations from shows such as BBC’s Dragons' Den, CH4’s Amazing Spaces, Fill your house for free, Find it, Fix it, Flog it, Mortgage Free on Netflix, Nat Geo's Machine Impossible and ITV’s 10k Holiday Home. Most recently Max has been working with Discovery to film Cash in the spare room and the Weekend Workshop.
Max was approached in September 2020 by Sotheby’s auction house to produce three of his iconic shopping trolley chairs for an upcoming Banksy exhibition and auction.
The installation comprised three trolley chairs, two positioned as a pair reflecting the piece and a single chair to one side for potential bidders to sit on and view one of Banksy’s most recognisable and valuable works of art called “Show Me The Monet”.
The similarities with the trolley chairs are apparent. Both pieces provoke the viewer to consider the environmental impact of our throwaway, all consuming, capitalist culture.
The Banksy piece sold for £7.55 million, the second-highest price ever paid for a work by the British street artist, and now you could own one of the original three chairs from the exhibition.
